Services at B'nai Chayim

Our Shabbat morning service at 11:00 draws heavily from our Jewish roots. We get started with a word of prayer, followed by the blowing of the shofar and singing "Hatikvah" (Israel's national anthem). Then, we enter the liturgical portion of the service with readings from the Siddur (prayerbook). The liturgy is in both English and Hebrew, with English translations for the Hebrew portions.

We then have a time of musical praise and worship, featuring traditional Israeli folksongs, contemporary Messianic and Christian worship songs, and hymns. During the fast songs, children and adults, and men and women, are welcome to dance. When the music slows down, people can come forward for individual prayer and have hands laid on them by the Rabbi.

After the praise and worship, the children are prayed over and sent to Shabbat school activities. A meditation on the weekly Torah reading is presented, and then the Rabbi presents his message for the week.

We conclude with service with kiddush, the breaking of challah (braided bread). Once a month, on the Shabbat closest to the New Moon (which represents the change of month on the Lunar calendar), we also partake in the L-rd's Table. The services closes with the singing of the Aaronic Benediction.

The Shabbat evening Havdallah services at 7:30 pm are much more informal. It could be a time when people ask questions about the Torah meditation and sermon, or it could be a time of Hebrew study, fellowship, or prayer. The Havdallah service also concludes Shabbat. People are encouraged to contact leadership to find out what the plan is.

On Wednesday evenings at 7:00, we have our Yeshiva (Bible Study). During the course of a year, two books from the Bible are studied in detail, one from the Tanach (Old Testament) and one from the Brit Chadashah (New Testament). As well, Yeshivas may also deal with the Feasts and Festivals as they occur throughout the year.

The power of prayer should never be underestimated. On Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm, prior to Yeshiva, we gather in Rabbi Michael's office to pray for the needs of our congregation and community.

Those who attend our services often wear ceremonial Jewish items such as kippas (skullcaps) and tallit (prayer shawls). Our Jewish members wear these as symbols of their heritage, while our non-Jewish members wear them as symbols of their solidarity with their Jewish brothers and sisters, and appreciation for the Jewish roots of their faith. The wearing of these items is open to all, Jewish and non-Jewish, male and female. We generally have some spare kippas and tallit available -- just ask!

We also have several programs to serve you and your family.
