Holocaust Memorial Day

Shalom Everyone, Today the worldwide Jewish community is commemorating Holocaust Memorial day, when at least six million of our people were systematically murdered by the Nazi war machine. However this number was taken from captured Nazi records and only counts those who were officially incarcerated and had their names and their deaths recorded. There is no official record of those who were killed before they were incarcerated, nor those who perished when the Nazi death squads overran east Europe and effectively annihilated whole Jewish communities that had been there for up to a thousand years. Hundreds of Jewish villages were […]

Celebrating Simchat Torah tomorrow

shalom Mishpocah, Tomorrow we are going to roll the scroll back to the beginning and read from the first and last verses of both the Old and New Testaments in as many languages as we can.  Please remember to bring your bag of individually wrapped chocolates and take your turn as we dance the scroll seven times around the sanctuary. Black Sabbath

Last Saturday was Black Sabbath. It was officially Tisha B’AV – the date when both temples were destroyed, but when the 9th of Av occurs on a Sabbath it is commemorated on the next day, Sunday. I am saddened by the loss of the temples, but in shul I said the real loss was not a loss of real estate, but the loss of relationship, when covenant violations allowed the enemies of the Jewish people to burn the temples and scatter us among the nations. So many people seem to be turning on the Jewish people by attacking Israel and […]

Summer & Fall

We had an excellent annual picnic on Saturday. It rained heavily early Saturday morning, just before sunrise and the grass was still wet when got to our picnic site. Then the sun came out and shone for the whole time we were at the site and people were even taking refuge in the shade. Our service was quite short but the fellowship and the food was quite good. It was nice to relax and chat with no time constraints. The only problem for me was the bug spray that wafted through the air every so often. Patti and I are […]

June Update

We had a wonderful Shavuot service on shabbat, where our children put on a play about Ruth! We had an amazing Oneg where people fellowshiped and dined well into the afternoon. Earlier this week, I took an immirgant Israeli family to the border in order for them to qualify for Permanent Residence status – over 16 hours of good fellowship and eventually rejoicing, because they were granted this next step towards citizenship. On Sunday I participated in a Shavuot rally in Calgary, which I enjoyed until a musical group used a smoke machine and I could no longer stay in […]

A Busy Week

This has been such a busy week! Usually things settle down after Passover, but this year they seem to be getting more interesting! We had an excellent Shabbat service this last week and an incredible celebration of our 40th wedding anniversary. Thanks you for all the warm wishes! We had a family dinner last night at one of our favorite Vietnamese restaurants (kosher, gluten free and dairy free!), and I only got zapped with scent at the end of the meal! We are praying for the situation in Fort McMurray and it is quite overwhelming. I am glad that the […]
